Sad News

Two days ago there was another mass shooting here in America. Another one. This time most of the victims were kids. Kids my daughter’s age. I spent the lion’s share of the afternoon parked outside her school waiting for the final bell just to be near her and the life inside that building. I just heard from Isabel, who told me to go ahead and write a blog about Connecticut. She also asked me to mention the gun laws we have—or the lack of gun laws. Why are these guns so readily available? It’s all senseless and horrible and no one knows what to say, how to explain to your kids why their grammar school went on “lockdown.”

Here’s a quote that made me feel incrementally better:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”
